about

When Calvin Cole was being recorded by a worker from the Library of Congress back in the thirties, a man walking by outside heard the music, popped his head in, and sang a verse of the tune Cousin Sally Brown. That man was Dan Tate. When I was recording Dan in 1960 [FRC506], I asked him about Calvin Cole, and he took me right over to see Calvin. Calvin had a tight, precise style of banjo playing that I really liked, and he was gracious enough to record quite a few tunes for me. - Peter Hoover
