about

Clyde Davenport, both a great musician and repository of old tunes from south-central Kentucky, was born near the Tennessee border in 1921 to a farmer and fiddler, William, and Lucy Davenport. In 1943, Clyde returned from WWII combat in Italy to work at an auto factory and to fiddle daily on a Muncie, Indiana radio station. While tracks 2-16 with Hobart Dixon on guitar give an idea of the sound one might have heard listening to Clyde on radio, the other tracks only begin Clyde’s vast repertoire (Vol. 2, FRC 104).

This rendition of Virgil Anderson's "Jenny Hang the Kettle On" is wonderful. It perfectly grabs the simplistic beauty of Virgil's version, but has such clarity. Amazing album! Payton Scott

Great playing and choice of tunes. No apologies needed for your interpretations of the tunes as far as I'm concerned. I'm a player and not an ethnomusicologist or historian. I probably re-interpret every tune I learn to make it mine. I have no problem with anyone else doing the same. We wouldn't have regional styles if it this personalizing were't part of the folk process from the getgo. Paul Gitlitz
